T-Mobile Upgrades Mid-Band LTE Cell Sites
As part of the ongoing efforts by T-Mobile to improve wireless service to its clients, the network provider did some upgrades to hundreds of cell sites across the United States. The improvements were mostly on mid-band LTE which includes PCS and AWS spectrums. T-Mobile has in the last couple of months been systematically upgrading its network capacity in anticipation of rolling out the 5G network. It is expected that this infrastructure will be critical when T-Mobile rolls out its 5 G network.
Understanding the Upgrades
There are various LTE bands that are used across the world. Each country operates its own frequency bands and the bands can either be FDD or TDD. The best way to understand the difference between the two is to think of FDD or Frequency Division Duplex as a band that handles two bands namely a downlink band and an uplink band. TDD or Time Division Duplex, on the other hand, is only one band so either an uplink band or the downlink band. The bands affected by the upgrade include the AWS (Advanced Wireless Service) which handles voice, data and messaging services. The PCS or Personal Communication Services) band which is the frequency used by cell towers to communicate with each other.
What These Upgrades Mean to T-Mobile Customers
The LTE upgrades across various sites mean that T-Mobile customers will continue to enjoy great connectivity and fast data services from the network. The upgrades will not require the customers to change any settings on their phones. T-Mobile is already ranked as one of the fastest networks on the United States and these upgrades as well as the expected 5G rollout will only serve to cement the network’s position.
Beneficiary Areas
Some of the areas that will see improved services, thanks to these upgrades, include:
- Altadena, CA
- Davis, CA
- Dixon, CA
- Elk Grove, CA
- Fremont, CA
- Gridley, CA
- La Quinta, CA
- Laguna Niguel, CA
- Lancaster, CA
- Homeland, CA
- Hughson, CA
- Huntington Beach, CA
- Fontana, CA
- Buckeye, AZ
- Phoenix, AZ
- Tolleson, AZ
- Tucson, AZ
- Livermore, CA
Clients in these areas will notice that their download speeds will increase and the call clarity will improve significantly. This will be the case even during peak times when typically downloads would have been slow. This is because these upgrades have significantly improved the capacity of the network to handle greater volumes of calls and data.
